When I start my computer I get a message flash up saying 'Primary IDE no 80 channel conductor connected' or something like that as the message is very quick! Does anyone know what this means and could it improve my computer in any way?

This has to do with the IDE cable that connects your hard drive to your motherboard. IDE cables either come in 40-pin or 80-pin; the 80-pin cables offer substantial performance benefits over the 40-pin. Go to your computer store and buy an 80-pin cable, or ask the neighborhood geek to install it for you.
