I do regular maintenance with disc clean up and defrag.. There is only on other user on the main comp. But it often happens even when the other comp is not on. Is there anything I can buy to boost the speed, as I keep getting cut off.

1) Move closer to the wireless router or move the router closer to all computers. The speed drops as you move away because the signal strength decreases and there are more transmission errors.
2) Open Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager. Get your setup disks. Delete wireless driver, reboot, let Windows reinstall. update your wirelesss driver to the latest version.
3) Rerun Network Setup Wizard to sense and maximize connection to wireless signal
That about covers it.

Jason missed the point; the speed reported by the wireless network card has nothing to do with the actual bandwidth of the internet connection. Rather, it has to do with the connection between the laptop and the wireless access point.

This can happen if you are very far away from the access point and are receiving a weak signal. It can also happen as a result of buggy drivers. Look for the latest drivers for the card and try sitting closer to the wireless access point.

Call your ISP. 54Mbps is an extremely high transfer rate and you likely accessed that in error. 1Mbps is pretty low for broadband but you'll have to check with your ISP to see what speeds you should be getting. Also, advertised speeds are MAX speeds and not the speed you will always get. The amount of people connecting to your ISP can also alter the speed of your connection.

Oops... maybe the poster after me is right. You didn't state if it's your connection to your ISP or to your wireless network that is the problem. My bad.
