Like with anything, a lot depends on both the subject and the hypnotist. I have met hypnotists that I respect and who have had good results with people. I also know hypnotists that appear to have gotten their credentials out of a Crackerjack box.

However, no matter how good the hypnotist, you can't make people do something that they absolutely refuse to do. If someone is, for example, dead set on drinking, then they can pay a hypnotist for sessions but it will be pretty near impossible for the hypnotist to help this person stop drinking. It would take many sessions to dig in deeply and find out why this person drinks. It may have to do with self-esteem issues or maybe it's because they're trying to be like their Dad, it can be cultural, it can be lots of things.

I believe hypnotherapy can work but it's not like the movies.

Most information about hypnosis is blatantly wrong. This includes information provided by certified hypnotists. When tested, most claims have been proven false.

However, some of the people I've hypnotized swear that it worked. Things I suggested to them (like visual/olfactory hallucinations) they swear they experienced. I can not fathom why they would lie about it and I trust them. Also, some other individuals I've hypnotized who didn't feel it worked, later exhibited things I suggested.

Because of that, I do think that hypnosis works in some ways, but it isn't the mindless control that is often depicted. It isn't able to cure physical diseases. It can suppress but not eliminate memories.

Yes. I got hypnotized on two different ocassions. It works by accesing your mind's subconsious, and suggesting ideas to it. You can say things, but you can also keep things secret, and you can't do anything you don't believe to be right.

I do... in my psychology class we learned that hypnosis is a very plausible idea, given the right situations... just remember it's not the cartoon version.

It works because it brings out the things that you keep supressed and once they are out you can start dealing with them.
