Ever since I was a little kid, I've always heard people say, "It's a free country." In refereance to America. They say that right after they speak their opinion. But did you know that Europeans laugh at us, because our country is run and censored by the media and the government? It's kind of strange that we're the symbol of freedom in this word but only to ourselves. So what do you think? What makes us so much more free than other countries? Who doesn't have freedom of speech? Is symbolic America just a big joke?

When the founders created the 'idea' for this country, it wasn't meant as a copyright or instance of trademark but as a statement of fundamental principals. The line in the Declarartion of Independence goes "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all Men are created equal" but it's more than obvious that the truth wasn't self-evident.

When Issace Newton extrapolated the law of gravity from the falling apple, he didn't create the law: he simply made concrete what had previously only been known indirectly. The freedoms America has aren't exclusive to America, no matter who says it. You are free to say whatever you want wherever you want, but the consequences would be different depending on where you said them. Even in America, yelling 'fire' in a crowded theatre isn't allowed.

People describe this as a free country more in terms of realizing (like Newton) something that had been true but which they were unaware of. Thus, the symbolism of America is/was meant to awaken the consciousness of people everywhere. The ideas of America were MEANT to be spread into the wind, not kept behind walls and security checkpoints. This is why, however much the government fails to uphold those ideas, America can still be the impetous of individual freedom and realization worldwide.

Even as we fail, we still succeed.

I know at times it feels that we don't have freedom of speech but alias we do... Under our Constitution we have the right to say what we want to say... anywhere we want to say it.... No body of government comes to our homes to kill us or removes our families from us. Being censored by media is one thing but by our government, I don't think so...... Lets go back to past history, who do you know that has been censored by the government?

An excellent exchange of view. You are a free thinker. But there is no free country in this real world for you. You have to get it through exchange of views with other and through love and respect other countries.

America is a free country where your President secretly and unconstitutionally taps your telephones and records your private conversations.

Gee, the US is such a free country. NOT!
