I think if you had a squirrel as a pet running around the house an untrained dog would chase that too. I really think the only reason there's a joke about cats and dogs hating eachother is the fact that most people only have those two pets running around the house freely.

My cat chases my DOG! In fact, cats are always in charge... all they need to do is give the dog one swift scratch to the nose, and the poor dog runs away cringing...

animals like to chase whatever runs away. Animals will run when chased. It's a horrible vicious circle! Why can't we all just get along?
