u want to know the 40% tax off or the 60% balance? since u use the words "taken off" i assume you want to know the remaining part, which is 60%. so 60/100 x 700 will give u $420.

60/100 x 700
= 60 x 7 (where u cancel off both 2 zero from 100 and 700)
=$420

Ok - there are 2 ways to do this. First you need to understand that 40% is the same as .40 or 4 tenths. One percent is one part of 100. So to find a percent of something, change the percent to the decimal form and multiply it by the main amount.

$700 x .40 = $280. Now subtract that from the $700 and you have $420.

An easier way to answer your type of problem is to take 100% and subtract the 40%. Then multiply that by the main number.

100 - 40 = 60, therefore $700 x .60 = $420 (don't forget to change the 60 to a decimal = .60)

Hope that helps!

There are different ways to find it. An easy way is to find 10% and multiply by 4. 10% of 700 is 70. 70 times 4 is 280. so its 280.
