I have given my old mobile phone to my baby son to play with (so he does not play with mine or the TV remotes) and i have left it turned on so it makes sounds. It does not have a SIM in, I am just worried whether he would be able to dial 999, I know most phones have a function that if you press and hold 9 it dials to 999. The phone is an old Nokia (about 4 years old). If you dial any other number it says no network coverage. I do not really want to find out by dialing 999 and seeing what happens!!! Thanks

Yes they can. It's a safety measure. 999 and 112 are available to dial.

Yes it can dial 999 in the UK or 112 in both Europe and the UK, or whatever the emergency number is in your country.

I would suggest buying your baby a toy mobile then he can dial what he likes and make any noise he fancies with the phone without any problems or risks.

I think that it could still contact the emergency services. I took teh SIM out of my old phone last week and it displayed a sign saying emergency calls only, so I think it may be possible. I used to work answering 999 calls many years ago and you do get countless children calling by accident which wastes a lot of time so it would be better if phones were a no go area!

Yes they will be able to dial 999, or whatever the emergency number is in your country. I suggest youjust buy a toy phone for your baby. Im sure the musical tones will have him more entertained far more than your real phone.

Yes! It is a requirement now that all cell phones being produced have to have the ability to make an SOS (Emergency) call, even if it is inactive. The only reason a 911 call would be unavailable is if you were in a remote place with no cell coverage. Pretty much where the Deer population out-number the human population.

If the phone has no SIM card installed it is not able to make a connection with the mobile telephone system and hence make any calls.
