He has been treated as such; he is the 'patron saint' of Wired Magazine, and people point to his 'medium is the message' and other sound bites as being prophetic. I myself use his 'hot vs cold' media motif in some of my lectures. But personally I think he expressed very general ideas and there has been a great deal of retrofitting of meaning to his work. He was a typical 60's guru; more profundity has been attributed than was actually present!
