and start, or sometimes, it wont turn on the first try, but when i try again, it starts up right away.

Is this a sign that something is going bad?

Sounds like the battery might be getting weak. If possible pop the caps off and check the water level. It may just be that you need to add water to it. They say to use distilled water but i've always used just regular tap water with no problems. Also, if it just kind of "clicks" when you first try it then i'd say it's probably the starter going out. Starter probably will cost between $75 & $100 including installation and a battery should only be around $50 - $75. Good luck. It could also be that the battery post are corroded and need cleaned to. Only takes a wrench and a minute but you should have someone do it for you if you've not done it before.

This is normal for a fuel injected car. Let me explain, depending on your make and model it uses what is known as a crank angle sensor. Now this sensor read an index ring on the crankshaft (inside or outside the engine). Depending where the crank stops at ie.. close to the "index" mark or away, sometimes the engine needs a few extra turns to tell the computer "hey the engine is cranking, lets signal the fuel injectors and other stuff and fire this puppy". Now if you have a carb on your car, well it all depends as I said. But that is normal for fuel injected cars to sometimes fire off right away or take a few extra turns :)

Think of it like this if I confused you. Your engine is a 'ferris wheel'. Ok follow me here, where you get on is the "index mark". now when the ferris wheel goes around one turn it "index's" a signal to the computer, ie fuel, timing, etc.. if you stop just after the "index" you have to go a full turn before it tells the computer that the engine is turning, then has to go another turn or 2 to fire. All normal stuff, hope both analogies helped :)

Visit the link below for more info on how this works :)

You *might* even have a starter problem.. all depends, good luck!

It nevertheless sounds like the battery to me. in view that approximately 1980 motor vehicle batteries have had a concern with cracked inner connections. (i think that became while calcium grid batteries grew to grow to be familiar, because of the fact calcium advantageous plates strengthen as they oxidize.) while the relationship does not have stress on it the voltage will drop under 9 volts (I surely have seen 6 volts) on the posts, yet whacking the posts with a hammer will jam the relationship returned together and the battery would be effective returned. The failure is maximum ordinary in rather new batteries, probably because of the fact the battery gets replaced while it extremely is got here across. Batteries with cracked inner connections virtually constantly try stable. The heavy load utilized in sorting out welds the relationship returned together, often times keeping for weeks or months in a while. prognosis demands catching it interior the undesirable state and watching the voltage on the posts (not the clamps) with a voltmeter while the lights furniture are grew to become on and left on. a common battery will instruct reducing voltage, whilst one with cracked inner connections will magically instruct increasing voltage. the 1st time I observed it, in a 1984 stay clean of, the vehicle does not crank till I held the important interior the beginning up place. Then it would start to instruct slowly, then swifter, till it became cranking usually and started.

could be the fuel pump going bad, you might need a tune up (spark plugs), fuel injectors could be dirty ( clean w/ "Techtron injector cleaner" put in gas tank every oil change).

Thanks for posting this question. My car does the same thing. It's been doing that for about a year or more and everytime I tell someone about it they tell me nothing's wrong.
