because the universe is still filled with mysteries that we can't just ignore; sometimes they need to be grappled with, and the teaching and suffering and accumulated wisdom of all the generations who went before us are worth quite a lot if you have ears to listen, regardless of whether or not they adhered to your own model of how the universe supposedly functions. Religion does not begin and end as an excuse to be at each others throats all the time. In many places all over the world right now, ideas that people have learned through religion are teaching people tolerance, patience, understanding, and brotherhood. Unfortunately, sometimes, some of the best things come hand in hand with some of the worst things. But getting rid of it is not likely to solve our problems.

That's an interesting question, and something occurred to me the other day on that note. So many people are trumpeting to the sky that there is no God, and they think they are the first ones! If they think it, millions of people before them have thought that God does not exist either. (In most places though, if they said that aloud they would have been killed.) Therefore, if so many people think God is not real, why do we believe in Him? It must be because He exists.
I'll give four examples in history that support, if not prove, that God exists:

Spanish Armada sails for England. England and all her people will surely fall if it reaches the island. Suddenly, a FREAK storm wrecks all the ships, and England is saved.

Kublai Khan sends the Mongols to Japan. The Japanese have no chance of surviving the Mongol onslaught intact. Suddenly, a FREAK storm kills most of the Mongols, and disheartens the rest so they turn around. Japan is safe.

Hitler's Third Reich enters Russia. They have much better weapons than the Russians, and a numerical superiority as well. They prepare to invade Moscow. Suddenly, a FREAK blizzard freezes all the Germans' guns, making them unable to shoot! Luckily for the Russians, they built their guns in the cold, so they actually do better in blizzards! Russia drives back the Germans.

And, most recently, Kim Jong-Il built nukes. The UN slapped his hand and told him to get rid of them; he flipped them off. He started threatening the US, China and Japan with his new nukes, and was appearing to be serious (what with all the tests and such), when he suddenly changes his mind and compies with the UN. He went from "I'm gonna kill all of you" to "Let's all be friends" in a day.

See?

Religion is still around because many around the world hold that these faiths are true, and beneficial to their lives. They also find that their faiths answer questions and fill needs that other sources do not.

The basis of your question, however; is mistaken. I would imagine very few private murders involve religion, and most are over money or love gone wrong.

Lately we've seen a rise in religious warfare, due to the jihad movement; but in the 20th century all the major wars were secular wars. In the case of the Communist revolutions in Russia, China, Vietnam, and most horribly, Cambodia, they were wars to secularize.

Even today, many of the wars people believe are religious are actually nationalist. The Arab/Israeli conflict for example, has little to do with religion, as the Zionist movement is anti-religious, but always gets sighted as the key example of a religious war.

Hi Greg B !!!!

No religion is NOT the giggest reason for muder,.............
"IGNORANCE", is!!!!!!! And the other giggest reason is that we may learn but usually we don't practice what we learn.

What ever the reason is to waste a human life (kill, murder, sacrifice) or however somepeople want to call it, "IGNORANCE" comes to place.

Is (a person's that kills) belife's that if they kill another they are in control and powerful. Well, the fact of the matter is that a person that kill's another, actually is because looses the control and feel's scared (or powerless) for some reason, (what ever reason may apply to the case).

So you see??? Neither is religion, hatrate, greety, power, jealousy, need, or any of the so many reasons some people kill, like all this sensless killings due to war,is the biggest reason for murder;"IGNORANCE" is.
And no matter how pretty they want to express it, killing is a very ignorant thing to do, especially when one takes the time to think that......................
"NO ONE IS BETTER THAN ANY BODY" and that in reality, "WE ARE ALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS".

Sad to say that this problem is NOT new to humanity. All this killing business started from the beggining of times, with " Adam and Eve's " son "Cain killed his brother Abel", because of jealousy!!!!

Unfortunately this will cotinue unless we come to LOVE one another, which in return will bring respect for human life.

" IGNORANCE", is humanity's worst enemy!!!!
GOD BLESS YOU

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR

Faulty logic, which includes statements like yours, is the biggest reason for just about all the world's problems.

Religion has been tapped as an excuse for people whose faulty logic led them to kill others. You should also take note of the fact that religion has led to most of our law, medicine and education.

Chances are one of the busiest hospitals near you is a Catholic hospital. Where I live there are three Catholic universities and numerous Catholic and Protestant parochial schools.

The first book to be published on the first printing press was a Bible. Much of what we now consider literacy was stimulated by religion and religion has produced at least as much good as it has the evils you perceive.

The biggest reason for murder is most likely ignorance, and religion, at its best, has battled ignorance.

So there are a lot of reasons to keep religion around. And, when you learn from our past mistakes, look at all of them, not just the ones you think are important. That's how you battle ignorance.

Religion will always be around as it should be. What we need is ignorant human beings to stop killing each other over their beliefs. No matter what your religion is if you believe that any God, or "The" God would justify murdering people who do not share your beliefs you are a DUMBASS!!! And you will burn in Hell and rightfully so.

obviously we're not, there is a huge lack of understanding and acceptance to that fact that we r different in our thought and believes , that's why religions are creating such a conflict, but many times religion are nothing but a cover for hidden objectives that influence actions of human beings much more than religion such as power, and money..... so think deeply, is it really religion what is creating all the mess we see? many times, i don't think it is

Because it brings in sh*tloads of money. Just watch cable TV, you will see. There is one guy on cable TV named Les Feldick - he tells people NOT to send him money because he is already rich from his cattle ranch. God shouldn't be hard up for money.
