Fushigi Yuugi..The Mysterious Play is my all time fave anime/manga series by the brilliant Watase Yu!!!!
The story takes place in Modern Japan and the mythical book world of The Universe of the Four Gods Sky and Earth. Two best friends, Yuki Miaka and Hongo Yui come across a copy of the book in the National Library and are each literally pulled into the story itself. Events happen that cause the two girls to become both Priestesses of rival countries and also deadly enemies. The "object" for both girls is to find their seven repsective Celestial Warriors and call upon the Beast God that guardians each country.
Miaka becomes the Priestess of Suzaku. Suzaku takes the avatar of a crimson pheonix and is the guardian of the southern country of Konan *which is ruled by Emperor Hotohori..who also happens to be one of the seven Suzaku Warriors. The remaining six are Tamahome *who eventually becomes the main romantic character opposite Miaka*, the guilt plagued, angst ridden and oh so beautiful cross dressing strongman Nuriko, magic weilding Buddist monk Chichiri, Leader of the Mount Reikaku bandits Tasuki *aka MINE!!!! lol*, the also guilt ridden healer Mitsukake with his sidekick the hysterically funny and yet smarter than everyone at times cat, Tama Neko and child genius Chiriko.
Yui becomes the Priestess of Seriyu *a huge blue dragon who rules over the eastern provience of Kutou. Her warriors include Nakago *the primary villian, rat bastard, identical twin brothers Amiboshi and Suboshi, Soi, Tomo, Ashtaire and Miboshi.
Miaka's goals are to proove to Yui that Nakago is an evil prig using her, summon Suzaku to protect Konan and somehow be able to spend the rest of her life w/ Tamahome. Yui's goals are to stop Miaka from ever being happy and revenging herself against what she erriously believes is Miaka's betrayal of their friendship *I'm telling you Nakago is EVIL!!!!*
I literally could write the whole story out for you but you'ld be reading this past Christmas! lol. But the story is loaded with action, romance, drama, angst, comedy, angst. It really does have something for everyone. As funny as it is, it is dramatic * implied rape and there is a heavy death count in the second part of the series The "morale" of the story, so to say, is to always listen to your heart, believe in yourself, remember not everything is what it appears to be and trust in your friends.
NO DA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
