You don't say much, Is the clamp still on what are you using to clean it and what does the ooze smell like and how much is it? I askj these questions, cause if the clamp is still on and the cord is not dry yet it could be your child is bleeding and to death I mean, as a teaspoon of blood loss on a neonate is as much as a pint on an adult. If the ooze is of a greenish or a yellowish colour and smells offensive it is rotting and your child could become septic and need serious antibiotics, maybe even intensive care. Are you using surgical spirits on the cord only and cleaning properly between the cord and the entry of the cord to the abdomen after each nappy change and handwash, if not well... You need some teaching on how to clean the cord properly. Maybe your child is too lithargic to cry or show pain LOL!!! To me a quiet baby for longer than 2 hours is not a good child, but a 'dying' one. I'll add more info for you, In South Africa we get the mommies to wake their children every 2 hours and NEVER let their children go longer than 4 hours without feeding. We don't bottle feed anymore either, but cup feed the babies. If not breas feeding that is.

If the stump has just recently fallen off (or is about to) this is normal. A small spot or two of blood is very common until the belly button heals completely and dries out. If the blood is bright, bright red, or you notice a lot of it, call the pediatrician soon. Otherwise, just leave it alone. Do NOT PUT ANYTHING on it. Air is the best thing for your baby's umbilical cord stump. Getting it wet (bathing--whether a sponge bath or in the tub) will keep it wet and it'll take forever to heal. Just keep the area dry and clean and it'll be fine.

You said blood was oozing out.....3 children later and one had a slightly infected umbilical chord, I wouldn't wait until tomorrow...it may get worse if it's serious regardless of the fact that baby is not irritable.

At least give your doc a call and describe what's going on....he/she will make the best judgement for you.

The main thing is not to panic as baby will feel this:)

Good Luck....
PEACE!!!!

How much blood is oozing. I noticed some blood crusted on my sons cord when he lost it but nothing oozing. It healed on its own. If you are concerned it wouldn't hurt anything to take her to the doctor. It will help your peace of mind.

If you are concerned, then by all means call the hospital, talk to a nurse, they are used to it. Although, this is normal, when you scratch a scab, sometimes it bleeds. I would advise you to call the hospital, as every baby is precious, just advise them it has happened, they will set your mind at ease.
