Hi,
I will be travelling to Egypt next month. Was wondering if anyone could suggest a book / film set in Egypt? Would be interesting to read / see it before going thr.
Piece of fiction is also ok.

I'd like to recommend Naguib Mahfouz's "The Cairo Trilogy" since it's a novel first published in Arab, set in Egypt of course by the Egyptian author who's still the only one awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1988. Moreover, it's wonderfully, brilliantly translated into English by a four-scholar team, therefore, it's highly readable and understandable with great characters. I've known and learned more from it regarding the Muslim families, their adults and children as well as their ways of life. In short, I love it and will reread it; it helps me understand more on their religion and culture. It's a must for you, please start with Book I entitled "Palace Walk" first (then, "Palace of Desire" and "Sugar Street") since the whole book covers about 1,300 pages, 169 Chapters. Be not afraid, you'd definitely enjoy it.

Jane Lindskold wrote a good story a couple of years ago concerning Egypt, the tombs and the Egyptian gods and goddesses. Pretty good read. Her husband is an archaeologist and helped with some of the technical language so that helped the writing. Everyone should read it. Cannot remember the name but any good bookstore can probably help with the title or Jane's website would be a good place to check too.

Why read a fiction on it when you can actually go there and see the place, real?
And, avoid any movie on Egypt because its sure to have been shot in the Nevada desert or Yugolsavia!!
Unless its one from National Geographic.
Have a nice trip.

The Mummy is a movie set in virtual egypt, there is a book by David Rohl entitled "A test of time" rediscovering the egyptian civilization, deep book though but if you have the urge you will love it.

The sheltering sky - Paul Bowles.
Although it is not only set at Egypt, the book is set in North Africa and really shows you the culture there.
There is also a movie of this story (1990).

(I have been to Egypt myself and it is impressive.)

"River God: A Novel of Ancient Egypt " by Wilbur Smith ,is an exciting book of adventure, love and war.
A must read that grips your imagination, so that when you are standing on the banks of the river Nile, you will see visions of Taita calling out to you. :-) Enjoy.
