I think that the Australians do not give enough "benefits". Considering the history of genocide suffered by the (ab) Original people at the hands of European settlers, simply providing benefits will not be enough. Restitution is the only remedy.

No, I do not think that Aboriginal people are given too many benefits. Their culture was killed, they experienced genocide, rape and the removal of their children. Aboriginal people still have a lower life expectancy, face discrimination and racism. A policeman just walked free after killing an Aboriginal man on Palm Island. We need to do more! We need to put this pathetic excuse of a cop behind bars!!

It's hard to answer this question without sounding racist .. I believe our aboriginal population has had to endure an awful lot over the past few centuries and that this should be acknowledged. However I also believe that if the aboriginal community wishes for us all to reconcile and live as a united nation, then I believe they should 'slow down' with their applications for land and estate. We share this land now, and to coexist they need to accept this. The government is generous and for good reasons, but perhaps they need to be generous is other ways.

Still persecuting those people. It's 2006 and you're asking if they are getting too many benefits? Is that supposed to mean they aren't entitled to the same thing as anglo australians? They were butchered for their lands and hounded for their way of life and they still are. Bigotry is alive and well no matter what continent.

"... or do you think its better for aborigines to go out and work and earn it themselves?"
This is already the case.
"do you think its overly generous to the aborigines"
No.
"what do you think?"
I'm glad that ATSIC no longer exists.

I think that since your government took their livlihood and way of life away, they do, indeed, owe them quite a lot. We're having the same problem here in Canada as well. Natives are shoved onto useless land and told to stay there with no school, sewers or proper housing, and then they wonder why the natives turn to drugs and booze.

I think it's not too generous, because they were there when the whites came to Australia. They have their rights. Same as the Indian Americans in US.

I don't think they give them too much but I suspect it is not given in the right way.
