Have you ever worked in retail before? You don't get motivated employees to work for what retail companies pay their employees, and I'll tell you that Walmart is actually fairly competitive in the industry, though I've never worked for them but I know people who do. I actually love that word "competitive". Gets us employees all excited about applying to work for a company. According to my personal lexicon, "competitive wages and salary" translates into "We'll pay you as little as we possibly can to get you to work for us. Even if you become a star performer, we're still going to cap your wage at a rate significantly lower than a living wage after you've given your valuable service to us for a few years." The pay raises don't even keep rate with inflation. Some years, there are NO pay raises. All of the hard work of the hourly employees goes directly into the bonus checks of the top level executives back pockets.

This is not a problem with Walmart but with the whole retail industry. There is no other explanation for how these companies can afford to pay their top-ranked executives millions of dollars in bonuses and salaries without preventing us hourly employees from ever achieving economic advancement for ourselves.

Want my advice? Unless you have aspirations and skills for management type positions, don't bother applying to work in the retail industry because retailers don't value their employees despite what they may say both internally and externally to the contrary.

Oh, and lightbulb, have you ever been a cart pusher? Its actually the single most difficult job in the entire store and very few know it. No matter what the weather, no matter how bad your body hurts every day, you still got to go out there and get the carts. Cart pushers, for the work the good ones do anyway (and there aren't a lot of those either since most of them are goof-offs who won't work if they can get away with it) should be paid closer to $20.00 an hour, and I'm not joking. Just go speak to a few of the people that do it on a consistant basis and that actually know that the word WORK doesn't mean the same thing as F*** OFF.

Actually they didn't always.. I've worked there for 4 years and it seems like maybe the last 1 or 2 years have just been bad. I think there not doing as well as they used to, so they'll do no matter what it takes to get there. And benefits arent' bad at all i don't think. I mean no they don't pay it all. But with a company that big i don't think they could for everyone. And money if you stay there long enough you start making more money. you can get up to a 60 cent raise every year if you do a good job.

walmart primarily hires unskilled laborers. At the walmart next to my place the cart pushers get paid $10 an hour. considering the skill levels of the employees I would say they are doing pretty well.

Nobody is being forced to work at walmart. If the employee can find a better job elsewhere they should switch jobs.

Wal-Mart is a business, and is in business to make money. In the instance where there is a conflict between increasing corporate profits and treating their employees well, Wal-Mart will always choose to serve itself.
Wal-Mart recently closed one of it's stores in Quebec, Canada because the workers there had legally voted to have a union represent them in an attempt to get better working conditions.

WalMart is getting a bad rap because they won't let the unions in. I haven't seen one disgruntled worker whenever I've been in Walmart - Have you???? Don't believe the hype
