It's not the first sign. The first sign is something no one can see or know but the person themselves.

I don't know who said "the 1st sign of madness is talking to yourself," but I imagine a lot of people think out loud. The plural in Genesis 1:26 does not prove the presence of more than on "person" any more than if I were to use the phrase, "let's see....," while thinking out loud. I am quite sane and I talk, mutter, and hallucinate all the time. You may want to see a doctor if you start arguing with your imaginary friends. Couple therapy works miracles.

Yes and we are all mad especialy me and you. Talking to oneself is a form of debating oneself and while that can lead one to false thoughts more often then not it helps you from acting before you think vs not thinking before you act. The problem is when you try to think about thinking and keep doing it thats when you become "mad" but trust me blowing your mind can sometimes be worth it. We lie to ourselfs all the time talking to yourself can be a part of breaking that process and help you to see whats more true.

This Q. has really got me thinking now. I think it has more to do with companionship issues and the human condition. I have my own theories . memories of the way life used to be stay with us like a friend, is a kind way to see this. When family, pets or friends and even enemy have left in passing there still remains a place for them. strange , but memory keeps many things.

Talking to oneself is actually a sign of genius. Answering yourself is indication that you know enough about yourself to figure it out. Cheap psychotherapy actually.

u know, i dont believe its always madness, people talk to themselves because sometimes you really need to get it out, even if there is no one there, but then again it could be a sickness like skitsofrenia (note: i dont know how to spell it but u sort of get it, right?)
i guess some sort of therapist could really answer your question.

I don't think so. You see, I'm often talking to myself. Sometimes, we really need to do some chit-chat with ourselves. It gives power.
