Can you hook Xbox 360 into a PC and save on PC Hard drive?

I'm trying to avoid the $400 360 but I guess I'd need a hard drive of sorts. Can you hook the 360 into a PC or laptop, or even just a PC hard drive and have it work the same way as the internal 360 hard drive?
