-The girl has Depression i think.
-The boy isn't allowed to date her because her parents dont let it.
-She goes into a mental hospital.
-The boy breaks her out.
-They drive to Mexico (I think?)
-She catches the boy talking to her parents on the foneoutside there hotel in mexico.

I remember this movie, but wasn't it Alicia Silverstone and not Drew Barrymore? imdb.com could answer that easily enough.
