You need to find out what that 9 year old child's interests are. Set up a project with that child that embraces those interests. If you get that child hyped up about the project and support them in that learning then embracing studying will not be a chore but a passion.

It could be a little micro business between the student's classmates and friends which has a limited startup budget say ten dollars, it could be learning to make a kite to lift a weight, it could be making a remote control car which solar powered...imagination is the limit!

By example.

Let the child see you study or better yet study together. You could get a self help book to study, a devotional study, something for your occupation to study, anything. Just let your child see you demonstrate that studing is important and is not just for a class, but for life.

At that age it should be easy to help them understand how important it is to study. Let them know that the more they know the more they will own and the easier life will be for them when they get older. Kids love toys so, try using that as an example. Use Walt Disney as an example. Look how successful they are and they are always trying to learn how to better them selves so that they can continue to be successful. Also, let them watch educational programs, kids seem to get alot out of that without you saying anything.

9 is too young for those concepts. You just have to tell him he has no choice, or make it a game for him.
