Islands has some very good roller coasters including Fire and Ice, The Hulk and Spiderman. Universal has more of the rides that are a show too and nothing too strenious. They have Jaws, T3 and Earthquake to mention a few. If you like coasters Islands would be the one to go to first. Doing them both in one day might be pushing it. There is plenty to do at one for a day.

I worked at both the parks when i lived in Orlando Florida and i would say do the universal one first because you did Islands of adventure the next day then you would be disappointed not having rollar coasters and stuff at Universal. If you are doing lunch at Universal and you have a big group of people i recommend that you eat at The International place next to Back to the Future.

If you want to start slow, go to Universal Studios, but if you want to push it, Islands of Adventure is better .You should def. go to Islands of Adventure first to start you off with a serious rush, because that's where the roller coasters and thrill rides. Universal Studios is more for families and such, with movie based "slower" rides. At Islands of Adventure, loops and speed galore! Islands is where the Hulk is, the very best rides. When I went, we had two days, going to Universal Studios first. It will be a blast whichever day you go!

I would definitely go to Islands of Adventure first. You will be able to get a head start on potentially long lines for rides such as the Hulk, etc. Most of the rides there are fast and intense compared to Universal. Then, when you are tired of a morning at I of A, walk over to Universal for a more calming experience. They both have fantastic rides but I believe your best bet would be to start off with I of A.

Although you won't be able to get through both parks completely in one day, I would recommend starting with Islands of Adventure. It's newer than the original and the rides are better. However, both places will have long lineups waiting to get on any of the rides so don't try to rush through both of them - you'll just end up getting frustrated.

I went to both parks last monday. It´s a shame my vacation is over...
Ok, if you are going with childs, Universal should go first, because there is a lot of things to do there with your kids. Barney, Shrek, Nickelodeon, ET, etc. And then, at lunch, go to Islands of Adventure, eat a great meal in the restaurant in front of the Duel Dragons, and enjoy all the rides, Spiderman, the Dragons, Hulk, etc. Is better because the roller coasters are almost empty. I take the first row in every coaster last monday, almost without any line. Enjoy the parks, i already miss them.
