Don't lie! If your boss in an understanding one, lying will not be in your favor and he will never trust you. Just go to him and tell him that you like working for him and the establishment, it came about where Christmas is special and your Grandpa will not be around very many more years and you would like to share it with him!Tell him you will not be able to work that particular time and you can work say New Years Eve!!! But, don't lie to him. Truth will get you farther. Let him know that you realize the business is his "family" and you respect that but didn't realize the work schedule when you took the job. Good Luck! I am a boss and I would rather have my employees come to me and talk to me honestly. I work with them at that point. May not be what I want but I give and so don't they! At least I know where they stand and they know where I stand. I can then trust them in the future!
If he feels he needs to fire you because of being a new employee and a full time student at that, he isn't someone to work for!!!!!!! You can find another job who would value your honesty!

Well, I suppose what you want is a lie seeing as the options are limited. Something health related would require a Doctor's note. Although it would really help if you were diabetic, because you could sure get away with that without a note. *winkwinknodnod*
(Requires a couple bucks spent on some diabetic wares but does the trick.)
The problem is most people are aware no one wants to work on X-mas or it's eve so it's a little harder to get away with things like a family member is sick &/or dying. Other than lying, your only true choice is to work.

You have a couple options:
Offer to work but an earlier shift, maybe lunchtime, so you can be off by supper and spend it at home.
Or you can sweeten the deal by offering to pay whoever covers your shift. It's actually a pretty common practice. You can either offer a flat fee or a percentage of the tips that they make. It's not cheap, but it's better than having no income from being fired.

considered one of my standard issues to do on chrissy eve became using around and seeing anybody's Christmas decorations. We constantly play a great number of card video games and do a huge puzzle, in keeping with danger watch a action picture with the full kin, in simple terms enjoying each and each others corporation. We even used to make christmas candies and furnish them to the neighbours. At our homestead, a definite present constantly looks under the tree on Christmas eve...maximum years it extremely is a interest for the kin to play, yet final 12 months it became a action picture we could watch together. On christmas day, we can open the grants, bypass to three of the pals, there will be a kin occasion. My mom is an dazzling prepare dinner. So there will be the classic turkey and hams plus a scrumptious hand-crafted cake. she would be able to additionally attempt new recipes. we can force over to bypass to three of the pals.

<>Your level of both responsibility and development is overwhelming. Nice work ethic. So, you don't go in to work and someone else (who probably worked the last 3 Christmas Eves) has to do your job! Very classy! No wonder no one wants to hire young adults. Grow up and do your job! Your grandfather might appreciate you more if you acted responsibly.

Go see your grandfather and enjoy Christmas with the family. At his age you just never know and tell your job what you are going to do. If you get fired then you could always get another job but, you can't get another grandfather.

Just tell your boss the truth. If nothing can be worked out, quit. Family is more important than money.

i ll choose the family gathering, try to say the truth to your manager, may be he can find a replacement for this day only.
If he refuse, then leave and let the family compensate you till you find another job or something!
