Why do guys only 'hit on' me when I look my worst?

Question

Today, as I was sitting in a corner during lunch wiping my red, running nose, playing with my gameboy and not giving a damn about the fact that I was wearing my pajamas, two layers of thermal underwear, huge glasses and with my hair in an unkempt ponytail with hairs flying every which way.....along comes an upperclassman, looking shy and telling me he noticed me coming in and thinks I'm pretty and wants my contact info! o_0

Now, this happens to me all the time. On days when I feel great and dress nicely, I get no attention from boys whatsoever. But on days when I think I could break a mirror, I get attention right and left.

Why is this? Are there guys who have a fetish for sickly, frumpy girls or is this a cosmic conspiracy to boost my self esteem on days when I'm feeling down-in-the-dumps?

let me tell you, i don't know how truly attractive you are...but sometimes girls can look too attractive...i personally call it hot girl sydrome..i heard it from a lot of girls in high school....so if you look too good guys don't think they have any possible chance with you....also...when you dress down...i don't know about most men...but i like a girl dressed down...its more realistic to me...ya know its not the fake dressed up w/ makeup and all that....so you probably just look more approchable sitting in the corner, dressed down, and playing your gameboy...thats my guess...dress down more often...be comfy...be urself...

OK, OK, OK! enough with all the flowery heartfelt answers. The truth, if you really want it (Not all guys are like this, but the vast majority of us are) is that when guys see a woman dressed down, or not looking so great, they see an easy score. A girl who is made up and looking her finest is going to take time and effort to get her to do the mattress mamba with. Girls who are frumpy, or a bit nerdier, or overweight, are seen as someone who has lower confidence and therefore is going to suck up any attention given to her and will be more pliable.

I know what you mean. It's because when you're all decked out in makeup and jewelry and pretty clothes you look really good and a lot of guys find that intimidating and fear rejection. When you don't try they see the natural beauty and you're relaxed and not looking for attention so they see it as that they have a better chance with the girl in her pjs playing a game boy than the girl in the high heels and smokey eyes.

a guy who hits a woman is an a$$, yet that doesn't propose a woman ought to hit a guy. no longer a reason to punch her interior the face, a guy is alot greater suitable, yet there are surely a thank you to take care of your self without killing her or heavily injuring her. Your talking about guys.. conspiracy requires planning and forethought. The question you should be asking is, "What makes you more approachable on days when your outward appearance is not one of your main focal points compared to days when you spend more time on window dressing? It could be that you are seldom alone when you a dressed for your best, so the opportunity to catch you alone and not risk public rejection is few and far between or you don't look high maintenance. High maintenance= broke boyfriend

It's really simple, most guys like natural beauty, you know. Girls who walk around all day with makeup and fancy clothes just spells trouble for most of they guys. First she can be too proud, too annoying, and a guy isn't in to that.
We are not comfortable with talking with someone who seems out of our league, so when we see a natural girl wearing average clothes, then she is more comfortable to be with. Like glasses for example, girls don't like wearing glasses because they say it makes them look like nerds. But to good guys that spells courage to face the world the way you are plus it makes you look smart.
Lets not forget the gameboy, most guys are still kids at heart so that is another point because it shows that you don't act like mature and annoying girls.
And that's the truth.

I call it the "Upside/ Downside Factor"

You see, a girl who lokks pretty raggedy could have a whole lot of upside to her (when she does her hair, make up, clothes, etc). Kind of like drafting a unknown player like Brett Favre. You know what your getting, and you're ok with it. But there could be a bonus in the future (a smoking hot chick or a hall of fame QB)

If you hit on a smoking hot chick, there could be a lot of downside to her (she could look like hell without all the make up... like Pamela Anderson). Thats like drafting a college superstar and hoping he lives up to the hype (like Tony Mandarich... you've probably never heard of him).

Its easier to live with potential upside than potential downside.

I am an excellent GM that has routinely drafted great ladies, an occasional hall of famer, and very few bums in my lifetime

becuz mayb the guys r toooooooooooooooooooooooooo shy wen ur dressed in all nice clothes...and mayb ur worst look still makes u look pretty but not like drop dead gorgeous so the guys would be able to come 2 yu and be a lil shy

when you are on your best look ? you know it ........therefore ? you may not pay attention to looks from others ? for perhaps? you are sure of yourself ? ..............
it is always when you are not ready and do not feel as pretty ,that the looks follow you ,why is that ?

i think it has to do with overconfidence at times ,especially if you have taken alot of time to take care of your look ........i ,too do that at times .............

Because, with all of the makeup and stuff, you look different. People honor natural beauty. Sounds to me like you're pretty beautiful.
