If you were offered a job with a pay increase at a rival company, would you turn it down on principle or accept it? A friend of mine just turned down almost double what he is making in order to stay with the company he started with. Was that smart?

Does your job have any loyalty to you? I ask that simply because it is most important to be happy and content (and hopefully challenged) in your employment. If that is not the case, by all means find a job that suits you better. Perhaps your friend is happy and more money is not enough inducement to "jump ship".

I am currently on a year-to-year contract at my job. They have no "loyalty" to me. If I was offered a better paying job, I would go quick as a wink!

For your first question, my answer is I used to feel much loyalty to my job. It was, however, a mistake. A job used to be secured for a lifetime if one does not make any serious mistake while on it. This is no longer true. With intense worldwide competitions come outsourcing and/or retrenchments. My friends who job-hop fared much better than me. If I were offered a job with a pay increase at a rival company, I would inform my present employer about it first. I would then react accordingly. "Maybe, maybe not" is my answer to your last question. It will depend on his reasons for doing so and what will happen in the end, both of which I yet to know. Have a Merry Christmas!

To a certain point, yes I do feel loyal to my company. But, if a rival company offered that kind of money I would probably take it. Most likely if someone offered to do my job for half my salary and could do it as well as I do, I'd probably be unemployeed. Works both ways!!

Wow - I'm not sure about your friend. Maybe he really likes where he is? I for one am loving my new job (new since June 2006). My old job was awful: lots of hours, stress etc. and no respect. My new job is the opposite of that in every way. I love it! Maybe the company offering him the job is a shitty company - you never know... I wouldn't go back to my old job even if they gave me more than what I get now....

Your friend must really enjoy his current job. Maybe your friend knowes that where he is at there is job security, and that accounts for more then any $$$ a company could offer you.

Imo , sometimes it's not always money that can make you happy . I did the same thing . I could've made more then what i'm making but decided to stay where I am because i'm happy and comfortable and can make ends meet. I was afraid of failing had I made the move. When your friend is ready he may make a move .He must feel comfortable where he is .That's important.
