Remember just after 911, when news outfits were complaining vehemently about how much celeb coverage they had and how that had pulled the wool over our eyes? It is that way again. Just where the foreign new should go is full of celb gossip. I think they are pandering this toward women. They are the consumers of this stuff.

Re: Truths
No I am not a basher. I pay for cable to get the news. I don't get much news, do I. I get a lot of celeb crap. I hardly have a single mysogynist thought when I read the NY Times, or even my local rag. Most people (known fact) get their new from TV. An informed electorate deserves the truth from the fouth estate, not pablum which is what celb gossip is.

So far the most nuanced answer is from a 14 year old girl. Way to go Lauren.

Some may think that women are shallow, insolent beings that care for nothing besides the latest gossip. There are also women who care about real events... instead of what Britney Spears did last week, etc. I think that newscasters broadcast what there is a high demand for, and maybe you're just watching the news at the wrong time.
During the day, all you're going to get is "news" aimed toward older women and housewives, but at night, there's plenty of information about foreign affairs and overseas issues. Personally, as a 14 year old high school student, I believe that issues on the home front are drastically more important than issues in other countries. If you mean situations in the Middle East or South Korea, that concern the United States, then my opinion is that there's PLENTY available to horrify you hourly- maybe you're watching the wrong channel!
Furthermore, the Internet is the most immediate source of news that YOU want to know about. Stop relying on TV to show you what you want to see and do a little research!
Hope that helps,
--Lauren

It's amazing that you are so concerned about the level of rationality in the national dialog that you would use a completely irrational, stereotypical attack against women to argue your case.
Don't you think there are idiotic men who consume all the nonsensical gossip as well? Does it not cross your mind that there are intelligent, well-informed women out there who despise celebrity gossip as much as you do?
And what about sports? How many men spend hours on their butt in front of the t.v. watching Monday Night football and other professional sports programs? Should we blame men for dragging down the tone of the national dialog based on that?
Sometimes it's helpful to analyze ALL sides of an issue before placing blame.

get a life, get a clue.
There there were just as many men 'CELEBS' (and non-celebs) out there making fools of themselves for the spotlight as were women after 911. You're just a 'basher'.

You share the same belief as my ex b/f who is Muslim. Blame women for all your troubles because of your insecurities.
