Beauty pageants are just a stepping stone for many young women. The ability to speak publicly has open many door for as a college student to get ahead of my fellow classmates in the job hunt.
I started doing pageants because of the money. But I also love the competition factor. Going into a pageant full well knowing that ever girl there is cream of the crop. Pageant girls are intelligent, well versed, physical fit, and poised. Not many people would walk in a swim suit in front of 300 people knowing that most of those people hate you and are hoping your trip so that their contest has a better chance at winning.
Most pageants are looking for a girl who can represent them, and the judges do not want some air head bimbo to be representing them. Yes, some pageants are rigged because the directors refuse to work with a certain contestant.
To clarify it is only on rare occasion that you meet the judges before the interview.

Pageants are not fake and useless. They are about poise and confidence, stage presence, knowledge of current events, speaking skills, and many other things. Most of the scoring is based on interview and how you present yourself not about looks. The swimsuit portion is to show that you are healthy not OBESE. How many of you can speak in front of national television or even a crowd and not look like an idiot? These girls practice hard so it obviously isn't fake. It's not useless because you win scholarships. The crown, trophy, and banner is just the icing on the cake.

Most of these pageants are for scholarships. My sister was in several. She hated the inside politics, but depending on her standings would bring quite a bit of money. She has payed for some of her schooling thus far by just being in a pageant. Its not based on beauty either...beauty helps...but over half of your points are given due to your interview...and your knowledge of current events.

There are many things that you might find useless in this world that other find useful. As for me I enjoy pageants and are useful in teaching women how to be successful. Everything has an ugly side.... As for me I find professional sports useless.

I don't know about fake, but I think they're useless. They say, it has to do with talent, brains, being a role model, etc. and not about who's the prettiest. So, with that being the case, I've never understood the purpose of the swimsuit category.

Yes, it amazes me that they are called beauty pageants, when all they seem to do is bring out the ugliness in people

For the older ones, the fix is in, the one who sleeps with the judges and are the best in bed wins. With the younger ones, if the parents sleep with the judges, their kid wins.

they certainly ask people to bring something that may not be themselves to please the judges...
I do not mind watching it on occassion but then again i am always up for watching interesting scenery...
quite frankly what do the contestants hope to achieve apart from personal wealth?
