I've used Vonage for years. It's especially great with the free calls to Europe now! Let me refer you, if you don't mind.

well.. if you want an internet phone like a phone on your computer... then skype is really good you can talk to people on other computers without it costing money.. and you can pay to be able to call house phone and cell phones and stuff... and you can pay so you can get incoming calls

time warner cable is pretty damn good, they got road runner, free long distance anywhere in states and canada, all 3 for 120 bucks...

before you sign up with anyone make sure that your alarm system is compatible with VoIP.

I'm in Summerlin I just had to explain that to my neighboor, he has a Honeywell/ADEMCO alarm system.
