1) An article is a written composition on a specific topic for a newspaper, magazine or online site.
2) A press release is an announcement of an event, performance, or other newsworthy item that is issued to the press.

An article is a piece that you write that is comprised of facts in an attempt to impart knowledge. An editorial is an article that uses facts in an attempt to sway public opinion. A press release is a piece that has been written in an attempt for a company (or celebrity) to enhance public image by putting a positive spin on events hoping to reduce the impact of bad press.
News story. Brittany shows her privates to paparazzi. Trailer trash or an attempt to get headlines or both, It happened a week before the release of her brand name perfume, orchestrated publicity stunt?... Press release... An unfortunate event, but it was great to see her in public releasing the tensions caused by the upcoming divorce and new baby.
