There are good schools (private and public DISD) in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas. Some of the housing (the "M" streets) want a fortune for nothing, but many of the neighborhoods around White Rock Lake would suit your requirements. The plus is that there is easy access to DART rail from these neighborhoods. In addition, it's a very pretty neighborhood with hills and trees. I am giving you the website of a realtor who specializes in this neighborhood.

Check out the DART route map online and consider something in RIchardson/Plano/or even Allen. You can get someplace nice that is not dreadfully far from the rail line and commute to it and then ride it downtown for work. The western side of those suburbs is nicer than the eastern side and unfortunately the rail line runs down the eastern side but driving a couple of miles across town isn't too bad for a rush hour commute and then the trains run every few minutes in the rush.

I can only offer a couple of suggestions. I haven't lived in Dallas county since I was a kid (Denton, Plano, Allen more recently). But Carrollton seems like a nice area. Also some nice housing in the area around Midway Road (closer to town). Hopefully you can get some better suggestions.
My best suggestion would be to check with a Dallas realtor. They can give you the best suggestions even if you don't buy a house.

Flower Mound was rated by Money Magazine as one of Top Ten Places to live in America.
About 30 minutes from downtown with moderate traffic.
Also suggest Coppell.
Both have excellent school districts and moderate to expensive homes. Also high property taxes - but that is in any good suburb.
Since you have a child close to school age, I would investigate more closely and in person.
Good Luck - God Bless.

Mid-Cities, Flower Mound, and Frisco are all too far from downtown. Try Farmer's Branch, Addison, Irving/Las Colinas, and Carrollton to start.
There are also great areas right in Dallas itself, such as Marsh and Midway (north/south) between Walnut Hill and Forest (east/west). As with anywhere, every area has it's good and not-so-good sections. Just do your research and be aware of the surroundings so you can make the best choice.
Good luck, and welcome!

Try looking in North Oak Cliff for a house. It is very close to downtown Dallas and we have some beautiful neighborhoods! I am a real estate agent with Abio Realty. Have a look at my website if you are interested in buying a place in Oak Cliff, downtown or anywhere else in North Texas! www.cliffdwellings.net
All the best,
Kat

I would suggest North Garland area over Richardson. Richardson is getting more run down by the minute. Cheap housing can still be found in Garland, Richardson, Rockwall and Rowlett. (East on I-30 from where your boyfriend lives - you'll cross Lake Ray Hubbard)

You have to be really careful with the neighborhoods that you choose. Carrollton has some okay neighborhoods but also some very rundown areas and areas that you want to avoid.
Plano or Frisco are very nice neighborhoods. Also, Addison is great. Richardson seems to be the place where you can get the most house for the lowest cost nowadays. I know several people that have bought there recently.

Flower Mound is not too shabby, and has excellent schools.
Hi There ump!! I live in Flower Mound, and it is VERY nice, oh yeah, the taxes are high, but you get what you pay for. Lewisville has some very nice areas also, the east part, and the area between Walmart and Home Depot is very nice, to name a few. This area in general is nice because there are jobs, which equals...money!
