"Often" is an adverb. It is used to describe a verb. For example, "I run often", "Often, I walk to school" - - the word "often" is telling something about the running or the walking.

"Very" is simply another adverb as you are using it. But this time this adverb describes (modifies) another adverb (being OFTEN) instead of a verb. So very describes "often". It modifies the word "often" - meaning it changes it somehow.

In the sense you are using it, "very" means "more" or "exceedingly" or "truly" when added to the adverb "Often". So in the end, it adds more to the word "often" which when you think about it is kind of cool.

Interestingly, both the words "very" and "often" come from the 14th century - medieval times. "Often" was then said "oft" and "very was then "verry" or "verray".

It's simply a matter of degree. Adding the word "very" in front indicates more. So "very often" means more often.
