A lot of folks round here think that the only worthwhile economic activity is manufacturing heavy tangible objects. And so they complain that advanced economies like the US and the UK are deficient, because instead of everyone being assembly line workers, so many people instead are worthless doctors, accountants, financial analysts, pharmaceutical researchers, graphics designers, etc.

... So my question is, how did these severely retarded people ever learn to use the Internet and come here?

Gee, you come across as though you look down upon all those stupid uneducated production workers. Maybe you could rephrase your question so it won't sound so much like John Kerry. Thank you.

Short answer: All new wealth flowing into the economy comes from agriculture or mining. Without the wealth generated at this level by production workers, there can be no money to pay those who provide such indirect services such as doctors, hair stylists, etc. Lawyers, doctors, etc, exist upon re-distributed wealth; they do not create new wealth.

I think you are wrong putting in pharmaceutical researchers on your list, they do have respect. Because economic growth is seen as coming from the increase in the productively of manufacturing, use of natural resources, and scientific innovation they see little possibility of growth from most services, it seems like trading labor. They believe this because of the examples used by economist when explaining the benefits of free markets, and they see the benefits every day. Even while you are complaining you invoke the results of research, the Internet, to defend the current service economy. Perhaps economist should use more examples from the financial or advertising industries to explain the workings of market economies, and how they will make the lives of our children better than ours.

I actually feel that it is the other way around, people here in America are afraid that manufacturing/labor jobs are "below" them...that is one of the reasons people say we need all the illegals--b/c the Americans don't want to do it. I think it is bull--another excuse to keep wages low and profits up. As far as importing all manufactured goods, it does concern me, right now the Chinese yuan is tied to the US dollar, so right now, it is good for the Chinese to import the $3 pack of tube socks to Wal-mart...but what happens when they let that yuan float on it's own...they'll do it, but when? If they were to do that, then we are at their absolute mercy and they can charge us anything they want for those tube socks (or food, clothing, EVERYTHING) because we do not have the manufacturing capabilities to support our population...we've shipped all those jobs overseas and torn down the factories. So although non-tangibles are important...do not overlook the importance of tangibles.
