When the Earth first coalesced from some bits of rock that were floating through space in close proximity of each other, its gravity was sufficient to trap some methane, ammonia, and some hydrogen gases to form an atmosphere. As time went on, volcanoes formed. These volcanoes spewed out some more gases, most importantly carbon dioxide and sulfer dioxide. These greenhouse gases were able to help the Earth trap some heat from the sun in its atmosphere, and the temperature started to climb. Eventually storms formed in the atmosphere and when the oxygen levels got high enough, a seridipitous lightening strike (recreated in the lab, for you naysayers) created amino acids from the primordial gaseous mixture of stray nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon, sulphur, and oxygen atoms. These amino acids eventually congealed into a lichen, moss, or fungus, and evolution took over.
