I have to write an essay about what caused a Civil War, and the key terms that I had to include the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska controversy. How did these events cause the war? I know what they are, but I just think that the Compromise of 1850 delayed the war...Did Kansas-Nebraska controversy caused the war because it caused a larger gap between the North and the South?

The Compromise issue was a temporary solution to keeping the nation united, but that's all it was. Over the following decade the country's citizens became further divided over the issue of slavery. The rift would continue to grow until the nation itself divided.

California for instance was a territory that had grown with the gold rush of 1849. It petitioned Congress to enter the Union as a free state, but ever since the Missouri Compromise, the balance between slave states and free states had been maintained. This proposal would threaten the balance.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 organized the northern GREAT PLAINS into the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. It also repealed the MISSOURI COMPROMISE of 1820, which had prohibited slavery's expansion into the territories northwest of the border between the states of Arkansas and Missouri. Under the terms of the act, the residents of the Kansas and Nebraska territories would decide for themselves whether they would enter the Union as free or slave soil states. By repealing the Missouri Compromise, the Kansas-Nebraska Act reopened the divisive issue of slavery's expansion and brought the United States closer to civil war.

Consider the Compromise of 1850 alongside the Fugitive Slave Act and then finally the Kansas-Nebraska controversy. Compare what each of the acts did and what reactions were caused by them and you'll have your answer. Good luck :)
