It seems like it! And I think that it is a very positive thing for the sport of hockey.

As far as blacks being more athletic than whites: I couldn't disagree more! I do not believe that genetics play any role whatsoever in the athletic ability of people. I'm white and when I was in high school, I had a group of black kids telling me I couldn't do the things they could. (we had a mini dunk contest) I was only 6'0 back then. Of course they where all wrong. Its not a race thing at all. Its work ethic and belief in yourself.

That would be cool to have more blacks getting into hockey, but im sure a lot of people think otherwise, since from what i always here; white people only have a few sports left over that hasnt been taken over by black people, Hockey, and NASCAR...

id rather see everything be mixed around and have everyone be accepted and not criticized for what they like, no matter what race they are. lets just hope it continues in a possitive way in ascpects of life.

There are obviously more black players in the NHL than there used to be. The question is; does that mean that more of the black kids who have always played hockey are making it to the top, or are more black kids playing hockey to begin with?

It's a socioeconomic thing IMO; the more middle class black people in hockey hotbeds there are, the more black hockey players there will be.

Are there more black players in the NHL then before? Of course there is!

Willie O'Ree was the first black player to enter the NHL...and a little known fact that many probably didn't know...he was legally blind in his right because of an errant puck...and he STILL made it. Although, after O'Ree, no black entered into the NHL till 1971 and only 18 black athletes has entered into the NHL between 1958 and 1991. As of 2004 (according to league reports) there are only 17 black players in the NHL.

I believe that is a great for hockey that more black players will enter into the NHL for they are absolutely phenomenal players.
As for Mr. J Man who says that there are black hockey players but you never see them because they are always on the forth or fifth lines. Sonny, I beg you to watch your mouth and check your facts before you make an enormous mistake like that again!!

In the Edmonton Oilers reign in the '80's, who was the goaltender that stood behind Gretzy while they won their consecutive cups? Grant Fuhr - he is black and is currently in 9th place for all time wins and has been inducted into the NHL in 2003.

Jerome Iginla, the captain of the flames (he actually made history in 2003 as being the first black captain), he is a first liner and is currently fifth in goals and 8th in the scoring leader race (as of December 19th at 9:00 AM MST). He was second in rookie of the year voting in 1997 (and only because he had roughly an 18 game scoring slump at the end of the season), and won the Art Ross Trophy in 2002.

Other offensive leaders that are blacks are Anson Carter and Mike Grieir. Black Players that have a big impact on their team in terms of big hits and fights are Georges Laraque and Donald Brashear. So to say what the Little Man above me did...is completely irresponsible and plain stupid.

I would love to see more black players in the NHL and the NHL has been actively promoting diversity in the league. I think its just the fact that Canada contributes roughly 60% of the NHL players while the population is only 2% black. The states on the other hand have a higher percentage of black population (15%) but only contribute about 15% of hockey players.

And thats all I have to say...

I don't think I really answered this question properly, but a comment made by another irritated me, so I apologize to the Asker and anyone who reads this for the facts presented.

But are black people best suited for hockey.. Black people are very good in jumping and running and dont' relaly like cold things
Theres not much running or umping in hockey. And hockey is a lot of technical. Black people are incredibly athletic.. Just not as technical.

The only difference between white athletes and black is the ratio of fast twitch versus slow twitch muscles. Whites have more slow twitch and blacks more fast (if you don't believe me and aren't going to look it up, then just watch a marathon and a 100-meter sprint and tell me who is in each)

As for blacks and hockey, yes I think we will see more with time. Will they "take over" hockey? I doubt it. Canada produces a substantial amount of the NHL's players, and unless they start shipping in all their immigration from only black-countries, and then those immigrants suddenly develop a large interest in hockey, it ain't going to happen.

actually no. there are a few more, but its not a lot. they are just getting a little more ice time. look at the lines, the black players are usually on the 4th or 5th line, and see almost no ice time.

second canada and the far nothern states produce most of the hockey players you see. and in reality there are not that many black ppl in canada. there has been a big influx of eastern european players recently. so you shuld really be asking if the russians, chezs, or sweeds are taking over hockey

I think it is a good sport for whatever race you may be...

...but Blacks are extremely good at the old basket ball, as they tend to be more giant black men than white, and certainly not Asian, Ha!
