Nope it's just perpetuating a stereotype. I've been from one end of the USA to the other and have traveled to a lot of small towns and have yet to see anything to fit that myth.
Look at history's biggest serial killers and tell me how many played banjo or lived in a place where bears wouldn't even tread?

I really think that it does. I've seen some pretty redneck people in more populated areas like NJ and around Atlanta. I can only imagine whats lurking in the real rural areas of Alabama/Mississippi/Kentucky.

Yes, I am from Rockingham NC, there are more houses that are abandon on huge pieces of land, I have had one for me and my cousins to play on for the last longest till someone bought it and fixed it up.
But yes I am born from such a place. And its commonly known as "The Sticks"

Hollywood imagery. Taking the stereotype and then magnifying all of the worse in it to horrorify and exaggerate.
Do you think all nerds eventually get the girl?
Do you think the minority in horror films always get killed in the opening credits?
Do you think that all jocks are dumb and all cheerleaders are blond?
Do you think that band camp is THE place to lose your virginity?
Do you think that all asians are smart? (well, I'll have to give you that one because all the ones I know are very smart :)

I live in "the South" and I have to tell you that, yeah, it does. Maybe there aren't any mass murderers, but there are times when I have like images of Deliverence flashing through my mind when I'm driving through certain parts.
