It's definitely not worth the risk. Drugs are a huge deal with major punishment in Japan.
There are dogs in the airports at baggage claim areas which can smell not only drugs but food items- like fruits, vegetables, dairy, etc.- and other times that can't be transported. There is no avoiding dogs.
I have seen people stopped for random searches and questioning- from opening baggage and looking through it, to having you empty your pockets and going into an office for questioning. If you bring drugs into Japan, you will be caught.

I've never been pat-search when i was in Tokyo during this december.
And i didn't see any drug dog anywhere.
But i heard that's going to change.
They are going to impose new rules and regulations for customs.
These new rules are quite similar to the ones made in Europe countries and America.
For the above anwserer, in singapore, if you import heroin for more than 5grams, you will receive the death penalty. Otherwise you are liable to be sued and jailed for breaking the law.

I had them ask to look in my suitcase once, while I was going through security on my way out of Japan. Turns out that what they were curious about was my can of shaving cream. I'll agree though with what so many people have already said. Customs officials have many overt and covert ways of screening passengers. And remember, once you're on foreign soil you are subject to the laws of that country. One extreme example is Singapore where the only penalty for importing drugs into the country is death.

Do you really want to be that stupid? Is it worth spending years in a foreign prison where you may not enjoy the same rights as in a U.S. prison. Yes, they can and do pat you down on a random basis. Japan is a no BS country too when it comes to illegal drugs.

Don't try to bring anything in... You might not get checked but if you do, it will be found...
A friend of mine and I were teaching there and we went to Bali for vacation... we had gone to the beach before going to the airport to get on the plane so we both looked like beach bums upon returning to Japan... They took apart our stuff and questioned us on every bit of sand that they found in our bags...
They took apart one of my friend's tampons to make sure it was what she said it was...
Still wondering what would have happened if they got the impression that any stray piece of leaf in our bags was something other than just a stray piece of leaf.

No, I've never been searched in my many times through Narita. Customs officers know who their suspicious characters are just from their look. They do it for a living, after all.

They turn you upside down and inside out if you look suspicious, not worth it being caught carrying drugs.
