I am thinking of buying an 07 Saturn ION as my commuter car to work. 40 miles each way. I need something that will be reliable and last an extremely long time and not be in the shop constantly. Any thoughts on the reliability of the ION and any other aspects?

If you're buying in from a reliability standpoint, I wouldn't. Long-
time reliability is not the ION's forte. As a matter of fact, nothing
besides low price makes this car stand out.

My suggestion would be a Honda Civic for the criteria that you're
considering. Better gas mileage, actually a lower cost-to-own
factor in the long run. Very reliable, very well-built. Excellent
resale value. Oh, and it's fun to drive as well.

Other choices would be the Toyota Corolla, Kia Spectra or
Optima, or Hyundai Sonata in the order of reliability and overal
cost-to-own factor.

If your budget permits consider getting the Saturn ION Red Line. It is the high performance version of the ION. It boasts a 2.0 liter I4 205-hp supercharged engine, 17" forged alloy wheels and can top out at 144 mph. The base price, however, is $20,420. On the reliability side I would not say that it will be in the shop constantly but I also wouldn't say that they'll last an extremely long time. But then again no matter what car you get, if you take care of it properly and use the best products, it will take care of you as well.
Also consider the Mitsubishi Lancer, VW Golf, Ford Focus, Chevrolet Cobalt, Scion tC, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Suzuki Aerio, Subaru Impreza, Nissan Sentra and the Kia Spectra.
P.S. From an honest point of view, the Golf and the Focus might not be as reliable as you'd like.
