Why do people talk to their pets like they're human???

lol, i find myself doing this often, but i don't think it's bad to do it. They cant judge you if they dont understand, right? And you can always pretend that they do, and that they are taking your side. It'll make you feel better.

It's kind of like asking why do people do drugs? Why do they, it hurts their bodies and minds. At least, if you talk to a dog, it's not hurting anyone. It's hard to explain, for some it's unconditional love or fills a void. It can also be related to the way people are raised. In my household, we always had a dog and we always talked to it. Stuff like, "good girl" makes a dogs' ears stand up and it's pretty cute, if you like dogs, that is. They know sounds, they do have feelings and they feel pain. It's hard to explain, I guess everyone is different. I appreciate that you know you will never talk to an animal, and therefore you would not own one. Thank you.

Pets...especially dogs are a lot smarter when talked to a lot. They learn to know what your saying most of the time, and if not at least what mood your in...Therefore if you want a well behaved pet you talk to them a lot so they know what you want and what is expected of them. I guess after awhile it becomes habit. And animals tend to listen better than humans :p

I do think there are a few people who over do it...but for the most part I really think its good for both humans and the pets to have their owners talk to them

Well I have 2 rotts and a kitten. I talk to them like they are human. No I don't expect them to talk to me in English but they let me know what they want. They have feelings too! I think of my rotts and kitten as my children, I do not have any but to tell the truth if I did it wouldn't change the way I feel or talk to my pets. For not only do humans chose pets they chose their humans.

To most people, including myself, their animals are like their children so they speak to them as such. We have 2 dogs that are super smart because we've worked with them and trained them, including talking to them like people. Just because they have 4 legs doesn't mean that their "just animals". If you have a pet that you're close to, you would see that they are more than that. They also have feelings and the ability to sense what's going on around them. You'd be amazed at how smart you're pet can be if you take the time - they can be man and woman's best friend.

When people talk to their animals, they are talking to an extended part of the family. those are the ones who genuinely care. Psychologically people need company just as much as animals doso it is natural for us to talk to other living things. try talking to your dog or cat and you will find that they become very relaxed and affectionate towards you.

Why do people talk to their babies like they understand what is being said? It's more an expression of love & affection than thinking they understand what is being said. What do you think an infant, or a pet, would grow into if no one ever spoke to them?

I think because most pet owners are human. If I could talk like a dog, I would already have a TV show :)

well you think about that! if someone from another country saw you and you couldn't speak their launguge and they couldn't speak yours would you feel better with them talking and you not understanding or would you rather them say "what?" every once in a while?? and really dogs listen better than people do! they may not respond but the dont interupt!

Their pets are their children. You talk to your children. Pets do not care if you rant about work, mate, neighbors, other drivers, etc. All pets care about is you are talking to them. Pets listen when you want to talk about your feelings, even when your mate doesn't want to hear it anymore.
