Tagline: The true story of the death of innocence and the birth of an artist
Film adaptation of street tough Jim Carroll's epistle about his kaleidoscopic free fall into the harrowing world of drug addiction. As a member of a seemingly unbeatable high school basketball squad, Jim's life centers around the basketball court and the court becomes a metaphor for the world in his mind. A best friend who is dying of leukemia, a coach ("Swifty") who takes unacceptable liberties with the boys on his team, teenage sexual angst, and an unhealthy appetite for heroin -- all of these begin to encroach on young Jim's dream of becoming a basketball star. Soon, the dark streets of New York become a refuge from his mother's mounting concern for her son. He can't go home and his only escape from the reality of the streets is heroin for which he steals, robs and prostitutes himself. Only with the help of Reggie, an older neighborhood friend with whom Jim "picked up a game" now and then, is he able to begin the long journey back to sanity.
jim Carroll (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a high school basketball player. His life centers on basketball, and his dream is being a basketball star. Once in a while he gets stoned with his friends, and step by step, he falls into the dark world of crime and drugs. Once his mother expels him from the house, he goes into the streets of New York, and together with his friends they take drugs for which they steal, rob and even kill. As the time passes, Jim's situation becomes worse. It looks like he will never escape his drug addiction.
Upon the film's release it gained heavy controversy. Due to its portrayal of drug addiction, prostitution and many other controversial subjects, the film was cut in order to receive a R Rating at the MPAA, and was banned in South Korea. The uncut version was later released on DVD in the U.S.
Controversy arose again in the wake of the Columbine High School massacre on April 20, 1999. The film contains a dream sequence in which Jim enters his school while wearing a black trenchcoat and shoots several students and teachers with a shotgun while his friends cheer him on.

Based on the early life of poet/songwriter/rock musician Jim Carroll ('Call Me The Breeze'). During Jim's teenage years he went through heroin addiction and then overcame it to become a famous poet/songwriter/rock musician. This movie is about that time in his life. One of Leo's best performances. It also showed Mark Walberg's acting potential.

Crack Cocaine or some heavy drug addiction...and one of the BEST movies ever done about it...NO ONE should miss seeing this flick. Personally, I feel it's Leonardo di Caprio's BEST flick EVER. He'd probably agree with that too.

Jim Carroll is a bit of a rebel and gets high off sniffing something, and then he gets into drugs and gets worse and worse, the story is how he gets into it, what his life was like, his thought before during and after using, and his rehabilitation. it's a really good movie, read the book too.
