hockey.. no
Its more popular worldwide though than most "american" sports like football and baseball
only basketball is more popular than hockey worldwide of the american sports.
but hockey is limited to areas with cold climates(ie. northern US, Canada, parts of Russia, Finland, etc). Soccer can be played anywhere.

You're talking about two different things. Recreational activities and spectator sports. As a recreational sport soccer has been more popular for a long, long time because it's cheap and simple to play. And less dangerous. That's why many more kids are in soccer than hockey yet fewer people stick with it. But in terms of what Canadians watch on TV... hockey is far more popular than soccer and it will be for a long time. It's true that I know many more people who were signed up for soccer than ice hockey when they were growing up. Myself included. But it's also true most of these same people today watch hockey and almost none of them watch soccer. Myself included.

It's growing in popularity in places like Germany. Of course, a cold climate helps.
I work with a German guy who says that soccer is not as popular in Germany as hockey is in Canada.

football (soccer) is the #1 sport in the world and Hockey is #2 in the world. Hockey is the best sport in the world. all 3 American sports aren't even in the top 10 in the world so if anybody says anything about American sports being the best in the world don't understand that there sports aren't even played that much around the world. Darts and Bowling are bigger the American football, Basketball and even baseball around the world.
Vigorous>>>> here in north America its called soccer because in the we have American football so that's why the name was change so when most people here say soccer they mean football not American football.
bon b>>>> you don't really know that much about hockey do you, you should learn more about it cause it's HUGE around the world 2nd biggest sport in the world behind football (soccer).
Hockey is starting to be played in warm climate countries like in India, Pakistan, even Egypt it's getting bigger and bigger.
GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!1

It seems that the questioner and answerers have only one type of hockey in their mind. Well there are Field hockey, Ice Hockey, Road Hockey, Roller Hockey, Ball Hockey, Air Hockey, Bubble Hockey, Foot Hockey, Gym Hockey, Mini Hockey, Power Hockey, Skater Hockey, Sledge Hockey, Table Hockey, Underwater Hockey etc.
Ice hockey is played on ice with a three inch (76.2 mm) diameter rubber disc called a puck between two teams of skaters consisting of a goaltender, two defence players and three forwards. The game is played all over North America, Europe and in many other countries around the world to a greater or lesser extent. It is played with two teams, while 5 skaters and 1 goalie are allowed on the ice at a time. In NHL rules, the periods are 20 minutes long. There are three periods.
Inline Hockey is a variation of roller hockey very similar to ice hockey, from which it is derived. Inline hockey is played by two teams, consisting of four skaters and one goalie, on a dry rink divided into two halves by a center line, with one net at each end of the rink. The game is played in four 15-minute periods with a variation of the ice hockey off-side rule. Icings are also called, but are usually referred to as illegal clearing.
Roller hockey (Quad) Roller Hockey is the overarching name for a roller sport that has existed long before inline skates were invented. Roller Hockey has been played in sixty countries worldwide and so has many names worldwide. Sometimes the sport is called Quad Hockey, Hóquei em Patins, International Style Ball hockey, Rink hockey and Hardball hockey depending on the part of the world it is played. Roller Hockey was a demonstration rollersport in the 1992 Barcelona summer Olympics.
Field hockey is played with a ball on gravel or natural grass, or on sand-based or water-based artificial turfs, with a small, hard ball. It is a very popular outdoor sports worldwide and the national game of Pakistan.
The leading nations are Pakistan, India, Australia, Holland, England, Argentina, Germany, Malayasia, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain while other nations include Japan, People's Republic of China etc.
Field Hockey has been played at each summer Olympic Games since 1908 (except 1924). Then there are World Cup and Champion's Trophey international competitions.
The first women's Olympic hockey competition was at the 1980 Moscow Games. Olympic field hockey games were first played on artificial turf at the 1976 Montreal. Each country cited above has both male as well as female teams competing in international tournaments world wide.
The current male Olympic champion is Australia whereas female Olympic champion is Germany.
The Winner of the male Champion's trophey 2004 is Spain and the Winner of the female Champion's trophey 2005 is Argentina.
The lifter of male World Cup 2006 is Germany and the lifter of female World Cup 2006 is The Netherlands.
The Top 10 Men's ranking as of September 2006:
1. Germany 2315 points
2. Australia 295 points
3. Spain 2193 points
4. Netherlands 2000 points
5 Pakistan 1810 points
6. (South) Korea 1500 points
7. India 1418 points
8. Argentina 1275 points
9. England 1249 points
10. New Zealand 1220 points
By the way, Soccer is NOT the most popular sports of the world; It is Foot Ball. The two are different from each other. There is a World Cup of Football (recently held).
Foot Ball is the most popular game probably because it is very cheap and fun to play.

socccer is loved around the world in especially places where is a great climate to play... How ever hockey is loved in the northern parts of the world(Canada, Northern US, Sweden, Czec., etc)... its really all depends if your tlking about the cold climates vs. milder climates. but hockey and soccer are both widely spread, but i would have to say soccer is more world wide than soccer.
ive never heard hockey as "the hated sport", but i would thnk thats becuze hockey is a dangous sport, and it takes a TON of skill, a lot more skill thn soccer.

No it isn't, although if it were a sport where any poor kid could play (like the beauty of soccer), then it would be, as it's a damn fine sport. Too much infrastucture needed, and too much money (hence why Canada owns the sport, with their most rinks per person ratio)
