Need to go to a copyright attorney for that.

Step:
1. Assigin a Creative Commons license but do not allow redistribution nor commercial use.
2. Use Digimarc watermarking (it's like the one in Photoshop, but a rather proper version). It's "invisible" yet can be tracked so you know who's ripping your work. Sadly, this service costs money so you better balance out how much you'll lose/gain if you use it.
3. Put on a visible watermark, or even more than one, over your image. Brutal, but rip-proof. With Digimarc you don't need that much though. :D

In any case you've been ripped, use one of those free Cease and Desist forms online.

Besides getting an actual copyright (check out http://www.copyright.gov/ for information) a lawyer once told me that an inexpensive, but not always foolproof way, would be to save your information to a disc or make photocopies of it and date it. Then you would send the disc or copies to yourself and keep the envelope sealed in case a problem would arise where someone would try to use your work as their own or not credit you.

The most inexpensive way would be to sign your name and then below write Copyright 2006. You could register your name as a trademark.
