well there are 27 satellites surrounding our earth and everytime for a particular part on earth there are 3 satellite in certain angles are placed which takes the picture of that part of earth and then all those three pictures are combined to get 3-D picture of planet earth

In 2000 the Space Shuttle orbited the Earth and topographically radar-mapped most of the planet. That's probably where they got the three dimensionalness. The Digital Elevation model is accurate to something like 30 or 90 meters (horizontal). As for the pictures, they were taken in the last few years by satellites, or airplanes in areas where there is high detail.

They have 2d satellite photos. 3D models in there are made by people who look at building photos and build them in 3d cad programs.
