One important topic to note is the economical difference. Make sure to analyze the different labor demands within their cultures. The North's path towards an industrial economy versus the South's labor intensive agricultural economy demonstrates the South's heavy reliance on a slave system that provided inexpensive labor to harvest crops. Not to justify slavery, but Southerner's backed slavery as a tool get work done with the greatest profit margin, while the north demanded textile, factory based jobs.

They weren't really very similar thats why there was a rift that turned into secession. The south was a farm economy and the north was an industrial economy and both depended on the other to keep their economies running. Both northerners and southerners accepted slavery as a valid source of farm labor before the war. During the war, the south had a hard time raising funds because the north could boycott their products and buy from europe while the south could not boycott the north as effectively. The north also produced gun, uniforms, bullets etc since it was industrial. The best the south could do was try to starve the north. After the war, the south was crushed by a devastated southern economy and a lack of farm labor. The north pumped lots of money back into the south to help rebuild. Society was different after the war. The north began to work more towards "equal rights" while the south struggled with the idea that former slaves were starting to carve their own livelihood out of the soil while some white men remained poor. Racial tensions were high everywhere but especially in the south.
