A circle requires the least amount of material to manufacture per given square area. In other words, it takes more metal to make a square lid than a round lid. Also, a round manhole cover won't drop through the opening.

I would think it was the simplest shape to put it in. Also, If it was a square and a car drove over on end, it may come out. In the form of a circle it is harder for this to happen.

Easier to drop back into place. No corners to line up. Those things weigh like 200 pounds--you don't want to fiddle with them anymore than you have to.

!? thats a good point...i mean why didn't they make them square or sumthing...hmmm...maybe hollywood was like the first one to use a manhole in a movie or somthing, and a monster popped out of it, and then other cities starting using them...hmmm...yeah thats it.
