If you can read the pattern from the written instructions, take a piece of graph paper and draw the symbols out for yourself. Nearly all patterns give you a translation for the abbrieviations and many of the doily crochet magazines have a table of the symbols. Learning to translate written patterns into charts may take you some time, but it is a skill worth learning if you intend to crochet a lot.

If you are having trouble understanding patterns, you can try www.crochetpatterncentral.com They have a section with diagrams about how to do the basics. If you still need help, you should go to a yarn shop and see if they can show you how to do whatever is puzzling you. Sometimes it is easier to understand the written directions when you can see a demonstration.

Also, some patterns are written in symbols as a diagram. That may be easier for you to follow.

Don't give up! I am a lefty crocheting right-handed. If I can learn, I'm sure most people can learn.

I had trouble, still do understanding the written crochet patterns... then I found a magazine called Decorative Crochet. It has the diagrams, or drawings that I found so easy to follow. It also has written instructions which really helped me figure out how to follow them. I couldn't find a web site for them but the address I have is: Decorative Crochet, Subscription Dept. PO Box 1972, Danbury Ct 06813. I think I found my first issue at a garage sale, and have seen them on some magazine stands. Good Luck!

Wow I was having the same problem. I found a book that has been pretty helpful they have the pattern written normally and then againg in plain english. You can try picking it up at the library if you don't want to buy it. http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-VISUALLY-Crocheting-Visually/dp/0764596411/sr=8-1/qid=1166647522/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-9535198-2277537?ie=UTF8&s=books

I solved this problem by doing FILET crochet, all you need a large enough design an fill squares or leave empty, as you count the spaces. You can also add visual finish or a bit of a twist of your own.
