For about a decade following the end of World War II, the birth rate in the United States was very high. Following that, it declined to more normal levels. Anyone born from about 1946 to 1956 is part of the "baby boom".

"People born between (and including) 1946 and 1964. After American soldiers returned home from World War II in1946, the United States experienced an explosion of births (hence the name baby boom) that continued for the next 18 years, when the birth rate began to drop. In 1964, baby boomers represented 40% of the population, which means that more than one third of the population was under 19 years of age. In the 1990s, approximately 76 million people in the United States were born in the baby boom years, representing approximately 29% of the country's population. Since baby boomers make up such a sizable portion of the consuming public, their spending habits and lifestyles have a powerful influence on the economy."

I'd like to say theres a conflict in the answers... people in their 40's and 50's and the dates of 1945 to 1957 .... that would make them just shy of 50 yrs and older (not in their 40's) ... but who's counting ... and yes I always understood that the 40 somethings were included in the babyboomer set.

Someone born in the 12 period right after the end of World War II between 1945 and 1957.
During this time period, the birth rate of the United States increased sharply as many soldiers returned home and the country was celebrating the victory and settling back at home. This was the greatest peak in the birthrate of the country ever. Currently the baby-boomers are entering their 50s and 60s.
Check this site it has everything.

Baby boomer is the term given to people like myself who were born from 1946 to 1956, with parents who went through World War II, the Great Wall Street Collapse, and who actually experienced the true meaning of the 60's from a radical change in music and clothing, to sexual freedom, to drug experimentation. Now ask about the terms Generation X, etc.

I do not know about the UK but in the US the term baby boomer refers to those born post WWII to 1963. It is considered the full generation after WW II. In the US boomers are lumped into one group and assumed to have had the same cultural and economic influences in their lives.

Yes, I've always read that it's between 1946 and 1964 for the U.S. I remember because I was born 1961, and my sis 1964, right at the end.

Something that causes the population to rise suddenly.
Like the increase of resources that would happen post War.
Does'nt have to be just War though. Any large economic advantage can give rise to a "baby boom".
