I suppose it's part of human nature to want to feel superior to others in some way. I have been on the wrong side of this in the past. I am not a goodlooking man, and I recall around 3 yrs ago I was walking past a supermarket and this secondary-school boy probably around 16 yrs of age thereabouts made fun of my appearance. While I could not make out all he was saying, it was something along the lines of "he has a head on him like a....". I pretended to ignore it and walked past but it really hurt and I often dread it happening again when I go shopping. I cried a lot when that happened and it damages my self-esteem. I wish these people would think first instead of kicking someone when they're down. I mean, what did I do to them to deserve this? Some people are just cruel.

I'd have to say it's because they can sense something weak in the person they're looking down apon.
It's an instinct to prey upon the weak and it occurs naturally.
They people you describe as "ugly" may not in fact, be ugly but may appear to be so because of a lack of confidence.
I think this question is more personal though.
If you feel ugly or "lesser" then others, you allow them to prey upon that.
Just pretend like it doesn't get to you and they don't intimidate you.
I know it sounds cliche but it works.
The key is confidence.

Because they are trying to convince themselves and others that they are good looking by pointing out 'flaws' in other people. People that talk trash like that have low self esteem and are trying to get a boost.

Because that is what they are behind their good looking face and they are threathened by the good hearts you always see in the ugly ones. However, no one is really ugly because it was just standard set upon by a society.

Why worry/? If you look in the mirror, you will see the one who will be loved for who you are and not for your looks. Looks do not count. Ugly or good looking, both act in the same way.
