Every state keeps track of corporations. Profit and Non-profit. Go to yahoo.com type in the state and secretary of state. For example, I live in Florida. So would type in Florida Secretary of State. Follow the links for business registration. Type in the company name in the search engine. If you cannot find the company's name, either it doesn't exist of they are using a fictitious name which you can also find on that same site. If you find the company, the web page should tell you whether it's active or inactive. If inactive, it sometime tells you why.

Below is a link to the Florida secretary of state corporation search web site. I have the website to about 15 states. E-mail me and let me know which one you need it for. The second link is an example of an inactive corporation. If you are having a problem with them, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and Department of Finance.

All charities must be registered with the IRS. http://www.irs.gov is the place to check, look under charities from their home page.

The Better Business Bureau also maintains information on charitable organizations. check them out too http://www.bbb.org

there is also a site www.guidestar.org that ranks charities, you can search there also.
