He uses a cane before the episode where he gets shot, I haven't seen all of them in order, though. Why is this? Did he have a leg problem before? Please help! I'm confused!

The real answer.
House had an aheurism in his thigh that created an infarction killing some of the muscle in his leg. It killed the muscle because the doctors in the hospital though he was just after more drugs. They wasted three days before he suggested the check for muscle death. By then it was too late. Cuddy wanted to amputate his leg but he refused choosig to have the anheurism removed and the potassium and other biproducts of the anhuerism released into his body. The potassium gave him a heart attack. The pain was overwhelming so he hasked to be put in a coma to let the pain pass by. While he was under Stacy, his ex girlfriend signed a release to operate on House's leg and remove the necrotic tissue that remained against his strick instructions. Cuddy did what she said but it damaged House's leg to where he needed a cane from that moment forward. As for the vicodin, he takes that to deal with the pain caused by all the ptasium and other biproducts that plague him to this day. Basically his nervous system and circulatory system is fried.
BTW, he was shot in the chest by an angry husband of a patient gone by. It had nothing to do with his leg.

He had a blood clot in his leg, which caused muscle death. He was told that his leg would have to be amputated, but he refused saying that it would get better, and that he was too attached to his leg. Problems came up, and he requested to be put into a drug induced coma. While in the coma, his wife (now ex-wife) signed the consent form for the surgeons to remove the blood clot in his leg. Because of the muscle death, he has trouble walking, is in constant pain and tries to dull the pain with vicadin.

yes, a blood clot in his leg caused muscle death.....which is why he needs vikaden....constant pain and his muscle isnt strong enough to support himself
