Not sure if you mean a rectangle or a rectangular prism. For a rectangle, you multiply the length by the width to get the area.
For a rectangular prism it's a bit more complicated. The formula is 2lw + 2wh + 2lh, where l, h and w are the length, width and height respectively. That's the formula because the surface of a rectangular prism is made up of six rectangles--four sides, a top and a bottom. The top and bottom each have an area of lw, two of the sides each have an area of hw, and the other two have areas of lh.

Surface area refers to a three (or more) dimensional shapes whereas rectangle is a two-dimensional shape. If you mean rectangular box/prism, it is the area of all the faces, inside and outside, as the case may be. If you want only external surface area, it is 2(lb + bh +hl), and if internal and expternal both are required (like in the case of a hollow box), it will be double of this i.e. 4(lb + bh + hl), the thickness being assumed as negligible. There are so many such models..... with some thickness (internal and external dimensions different), with or without lid/bottom, etc.
If you mean only rectangle, it should be refered as area which is given by l x b sq.units

Area of a rectangle is length times width: A=lw.
Since you said surface area, I'm guessing that you mean a rectangular prism, also known as a rectangular solid. Basically, shaped like a box.
There are 6 faces on such a solids. Opposite faces are equal. The 3 dimensions are length, width & hight. these rectangles have areas that are the products of 2 of the dimensions.
area= 2*length*width+2*length*hight+2*width*length or
A=2(lw+lh+wh)

Are you referring to the area or the surface area?
Area is defined as the length * the width and tells you how many square units of space the 2-d object occupies
Surface area on the other had is for 3-d objects and is for telling you
how many square unit of space each o fthe different sides occupies.
The formula for this would be the length * the width of each side added all together. You should have a total of 6 numbers to add together.
Hope that answers your question...

a rectangle is two-dimensional, not three-dimensional. It does not have a surface, it has an area. The area of a rectangle, of course, is the length times the width. Now if you mean a three-dimensional object that is indefinitely thin, then the surface has two sides, which has area twice the length times the width.
S.A. = 2LW

HI MY NAME IS YOLANDA;
TO FIND THE SURFACE AREA OF A RECTANGEL,
YOU MEASURE THE LENGTH OF THE RECTANGLE AND THEN MEASURE THE WIDTH OF THE RECTANGLE-
AFTER DOING SO MULTIPLE THE LENGTH AND THE WIDTH( ALSO KNOWN AS THE BREATH)
THE ANSER YOU GET WILL BE IN SQ
EG
THE LENGHT OF A DEAK IS 10 INCHES LONG AND THE BREATH IS 6 INCHES WIDE- FIND THE AREA OF THE DEAK?
A = LB
L=10''
B=6''
A=60 INCHES SQUARED
I HOPE THIS HELPS- GOOD LUCK!
ALSO NOTE THERE IS A DIFFRENCE BETWEEN SURFACE AREA AND TOTAL SURFACE AREA,WHICH IS THE SUM OF THE AREA OF ALL THE FACES OF THE OBJECT YOU MEASURES.
EG YOU HAVE A SHOE BOX ,COUNT THE FACES (ALL) MEASURE EACH FACES' LENGHTS ANDD BREATHS ,FIND THE AREA FOR EACH FACE AND ADD THEM ALL TOGETHER!

your question doesnt make sense
by surface area, u mean something that is 3d but u said rectangle... which is 2d
so the formula depends on which planet u are on

SA of Rectangle = length x width
If you're talking about SA of a rectangular box
2 ( length x width) + 2 (length x height) + 2 (height x width).

Is this your homework?
This is very basic and you should have not asked about it.
But, that is o.k.
Area of a rectangle is width * height
A = w*h
