Make them repeat this sentence:

"I am a little glow-worm. A glow worm's never glum. How can I be unhappy when the sun shines out my bum?"

Sounds strange but I do it at work to raise my spirits.

There's a couple of things you can do. I assume this person is in the same room with you when you talk to them instead of on the phone, so I'll answer it like you'll be able see what their up to.

1. Don't cross your arms - crossing arms in any culture is a sign of negitive behavior, so don't do it! If they do it, try to break it up by giving them something to hold like a pen or a piece of paper
2. Sit at a 45 degree angle towards them - facing them head on will be too confrontational.
3. Nod your head - nodding your head makes people talk more about their problems because you give the impression of approval. Let them vent out whatever is on their mind
4. Talk at the same pace they do - people who mimic other peoples talking speed will make you seem like you're a better listener. Also try and mimic the way they sit or where their arms are if possible

Do all of these steps before you cheer someone up. Now depending on the type of person, it will all depend on what makes them happy, whether it be a joke or some hobby they have intrest in...

You dish out compliments at the person. Make the person feel better about who they are. Be postive and if they still are grumpy tell them you will be there for them no matter what or how they act and let the person know you care about them with all of your heart and tell the person they are very special to you

slapstick always works. if something tragic happens to you in front of them, they automatically feel better becasue someone else if worse off than them, and the attention is all on you then. And show them how to be gracious about it, not grumpy.

Bake them a cake with a big smiley on it and tell them you were thinking of them today. Then back off and give them space. They will work it out and they will also know you are there if they need you.
